Here in Spain pita bread is finally becoming more popular and it is becoming more common for people to want to incorporate it into their weekly cooking at home. Maybe you are one of those people. You love pita bread; you couldn’t be happier when it’s served on the menu at your favourite local eatery or restaurant. But when you get home you feel a bit lost and you just don’t know what to do with the pita bread.
You know it’s delicious served stuffed full of kebab meat and you have tried making fajitas using pita bread instead of a wrap. The latter are two very valid options, but pitta bread can be used for so much more. In fact, the possibilities are endless.
First of all, when someone asks us what they should put inside pita bread we start by saying ‘whatever you want!´ You can use pita in the same way you would use any other kind of bread, except this time you have a nifty pocket to fill. So think ham and cheese and pickle, tuna mayonnaise, you name it, pita is perfect for any of these regular sandwich fillings. In addition to all that, and this is thanks to the glorious pita pocket we mentioned earlier, you can use your pita almost as if it were a little pouch for saucier foods, like curries, leftover stews, rice dishes. Yep, try filling a pita bread next time you have leftover curry or stew – you can thank us later!
If you haven’t tried using a pita instead of a burger bun for your hamburger, then you have been missing out! In fact, in our opinion, a burger inside a pita is much easier to eat – no ketchup and mustard dripping all over – it just makes sense! Pulled pork served inside a pita is simply divine and you have to try slow-cooked lamb in pita with a delicious tahini sauced drizzled over the top.
What about the vegans we hear you ask? Well, the possibilities are endless too – roasted cauliflower, smoked peppers and aubergine with a pesto spread or a soya-meat alternative, for example.
We have two children and they love filling their pita with smashed avocado and a sprinkling of salt, or with Nutella and banana slices. Talking of sweet options, we also love peanut butter and jam or Philadelphia and fruit spread for a ‘cheesecake’ themed pita.
